News – North and South Korea to meet again.
Considering the two have been against each other for over half a century this could be a very good thing or a very bad thing. This will mark the second time that the two of them have actually had talks with each other in the last 50 years. The first time was back in 2000, but that all turned out to be a phony press conference.
Back in 2000, with much fanfare, Kim Jong Il met his South Korean counterpart in a historic North South summit, where the two sides worked to try to bury a hatchet that’s now more than 50 years old. But then tensions with the U.S. over the nuclear issue blunted any forward momentum and a scandal later revealed the summit to have been very much a sham. Will this meeting, scheduled for Aug. 28-30 in Pyongyang, be any different?
I can understand the skepticism. N. Korea has had a reputation of leading a very secretive and stubborn lifestyle that pretty much has bucked against the rest of the world. However, with the recent events with N.Korea disassembling it’s nuke programs and shutting down their reactors it seems that the ball might actually get rolling this time. It would be kind nice to see them put all that mess that tore them apart behind them already.
This time, diplomats and politicians in Seoul insist, the summit comes amid genuine momentum on the nuclear front — momentum that they believe the meeting at the end of August will add to. Inspectors from the United Nations were in North Korea last month to verify that the Pyongyang had idled its nuclear plant at Yongbyon.
There has already been some positive momentum building in settling the N. Korea disputes peacefully and if this meeting goes off without a hitch and some progress is made? Well, lets just say that it will be a good day for all of us.
