“The Man With the Million Dollar Balls”
Gotta give it to TIME….they’re obviously trying to get their clicks today.
It’s about Todd Mcfarlene and his obsession with buying the record breaking baseballs that athletes break the records on. He’s quite the baseball fan and he’s spent a hefty amount of cash trying to get his hands on some pretty expensive record breaking hits. He’s made the news because back in 2003 he spent over $500,000 to get his hands on the record breaking 73rd home run ball that Barry Bonds hit.
TIME wanted to know if he was going to pony up the cash for the 756th homer to break Hank Aarons record:
No, the ball that’s interesting to me is the last one Barry hits. That becomes the new number they print in the record books. 756 is cool, but 62 was cool when McGwire hit it, and I put my money on 70. This one is a pretty good ball. It’s a helluva-story ball. It’s a conversation-starter ball. But it’s not the ball. If you’re going to spend gobs of money, why not wait until the end?
I kinda agree with him. Wouldn’t you rather have the ball that “sets” the record rather than the one that “breaks” it?
