Friday Post – Open Thread

August 4, 2007 Aurvant Leave a comment

Open Thread because it’s Friday and this is just something that people do every now and then.

Funny video for chuckles. Post about whatever you want and rant away if you have to. Just keep it reasonably clean….or something. I’ll catch back up on Saturday.

News! – Top Taliban possibly snuffed.

Air strike during a hanging

Reports are saying that the Taliban members in question were hanging two people who were suspected as “spies” for the government. Apparently people came out of their homes to watch. To watch?

Here’s to hoping that the bombs hit their intended target: Mullah Dadullah Monsoor and his sickening crew.

UPDATE: I really have to give credit to Dan Riehl for finding this, but i’m going to give my spin on the CBC/Reuters bit part of it.

CBC and Reuters have a history of making erroneous claims when it comes to their news stories in Iraq and Afghanistan. So, I really call their numbers here in to question. Besides the news story I linked to earlier told that people were coming out to watch a hanging done by the Taliban. It is possible that people may have been injured, but those numbers, do not jive with the initial report that only 20 people were injured and were linked to the Taliban.

I’ll update it as more unfolds.

UPDATE 2: Reuters has gone back now and claimed that the toll at the bombing was just a few injured.

Other sites are still claiming that “eyewitnesses” say that at least over 100 were killer or injured in the air-strike.  The number’s ranging anywhere from 20 wounded to Over 100 dead, but if Reuters is calling back it’s earlier numbers of….ohhhh….300! then chances are that the given “eyewitness” accounts were a bit erroneous. I’ll have more whenever it comes up.

Science – Scared scientists make up crazy ideas.

To save the planet no less

Just another apocolyptic news story about how scientists are trying to come up with ways to stop Global Warming even though it isn’t anything like the doomsayers claim it to be. I could go in to paragraph after paragraph of how we have already experienced warming and cooling periods over the course of the planets life cycle, and how the Medieval Warming Period was substantially warmer than we are now. I could also tell you that solar scientists has said that around 2011-2012 that the Sun will be entering it’s Schwab (I think that’s the spelling) cycle and will be burning at a much lower temperature than it is now. One of the lowest cycles of the Sun when it has relatively no sunspots. Last time it did this we had a mini-ice age, but you probably don’t want to hear about that.

My favorite idea so far:

A more controversial variation on the solar shield theme, but one that is proving more and more popular due to the fact that it is both less costly and less complicated than space-based alternatives, is the creation of a stratospheric solar shield using sulphur.

That’s nice. Let’s just make the whole planet smell like a far. But hey! At least it will be a cooling breeze.

Oh well, the scientists will continue throwing out crackpot ideas to try and save the world even though it isn’t remotely in trouble of Global Warming. All that grant money and research wasted when simple conservation, recycling, replanting, and finding cleaner fuels would probably have more of an effect.

Science – Military bots….Roll out!

Ohhh yeaaaaaaaah.

That is just awesome and the only thing I can ask is “What took you guys so long?” I know they are sending these things on the front lines to help with urban battles, but what I want to know is why we aren’t marching these things lined up down the streets to, and quote me on this, “Smite our enemies with divine mechanized Judgment”. They call it “The Sword” and there is nothing more righteous sounding than that.
